WALKING THE EAST END Londons East End once notorious for being the home of Jack the Ripper who stalked and murdered his victims on its means streets in 1888 spreading fear throughout the city. Despite all the publicity and police investigations the killer was never caught and his identity remains a mystery today ,thus creating a whole industry in books,movies and conspiracy theories today. In 188 the east end of London was a melting pot of many different nationalities trying to make a living and survive the harsh conditions of poverty. There was a growing fear of alien invaders as more and more people from Eastern Europe arrived many of them jews fleeing persecution in Europe. By 1888 Whitechapel had one of the most densest populations of Jews in the city and the murders stirred up anti Jewish feelings and fears about immigrants taking jobs creating social unrest which the government was keen to avoid.
